I bought this lens 5 months ago knowing it would stay on my D90 body only nearly 100% of the time. I did not want to deal with a limited kit lens and changing different lens around so this is a great all around lens. I am not a professional so this lens is great for the average user. Pictures come out clear with no significant issues (nor minor issues as far as I can tell). Pair it with a 72mm filter and you are good to go. I have no issues with lens creep whatsoever. Took this lens skiing to Big Sky and recently to the Grand Canyon and it performed flawlessly. I may be in the market for a wide angle lens however, as trying to fit the massive Grand Canyon into one shot is extremely difficult! Great lens, highly recommended.

As far as I’m concerned, image quality from Nikon DSLRs has really been quite excellent at least since the introduction of the D70. Of course there have been all kinds of incremental improvements since then, but comparing anything since the D70 to the funky highlights produced by the earlier D100, for example, makes it clear that we have long since reached the point of diminishing returns when it comes to real, visible improvements in DSLR image quality. In terms of the finer points it will continue to improve, but whether you buy a D5000, Nikon D300s Digital SLR Camera or a D700, the differences between the images you can make with Nikon D300s Digital SLR Camera are going to be tiny compared with the differences in how you can use it – with the exception of the FX-vs-DX field of view, which is very important.

If you are accustomed to handling other 70-200 zooms, I suppose the focus breathing may be a consideration and could impact your shooting under some circumstances. It’s a hybrid in some sense, morphing into a different zoom category at very close range. Honestly, it not only doesn’t bother me, it feels natural. Or go shoot with primes for a little while and you’ll forget all about it, especially once you look at the images.
